Lantern
Safety-first bike GPS navigation for the USA, Canada and Mexico. There's no "fastest" route, only safe ones.
The idea
Most bike routing tries to be fast. Lantern tries to keep you off roads that can kill you. Every route is checked street by street, and any route that uses a busy road is planned again with that road banned.
- Freeways and expressways: never, bike lane or not.
- Arterials and anything posted 35 mph or more: only with a physically separated bike lane. A painted lane isn’t enough.
- Ramps count as part of the road they connect to.
- Sidewalks are tracked separately, since riding them is illegal in some cities.
- When no clean route exists, it picks the least risky one and marks the busy stretches in red.
Features
- Google Maps-style turn-by-turn navigation with spoken prompts and automatic rerouting.
- A road safety breakdown for each route: bike paths, bike lanes, quiet streets and busy roads.
- Ride with GPS-style planning: tap to add stops, drag to reshape.
- An elevation profile that shows the grade at any point.
- Preview ride, which simulates the route before you go.
- Address search across all three countries: US Census, Natural Resources Canada, and OpenStreetMap for Mexico.
One codebase runs as an iOS app, an Android app and an installable web app.
