Starting TermCraft
Why I'm building my own terminal and session manager, and what it has to do on day one.
I spend a lot of time on remote machines: switches over serial, servers over SSH, the occasional box that only speaks Telnet. I wanted one free, open-source app that handles all of it, organized in a session tree, without a subscription.
Must-haves from day one:
- SSH2, Telnet, serial and local shells in tabs.
- A session manager with folders that imports
~/.ssh/config. - Jump hosts and port forwarding that just work.
- Logins stored in the OS keychain, never in plain text.
Everything else (button bars, SFTP, VNC/RDP, themes) came after.
